“Say what you will about the Barbara Streisand version of A Star is Born (just be careful who you say it to!), in the musical segments it soars. That’s because Streisand and director (ostensibly) Frank Pierson opted to record all the music live on film rather than the usual movie musical practice of lip synching to prerecorded tracks, which gave this Star a sense of reality (well…) and immediacy.
And Lynn Loosier goes after the same effect on What I Like (she says, in her liner notes, that she had “always dreamed of recording a project live)”“You can take the girl out of Georgia …, but you can’t take Georgia out of the girl. Every ditty she does in a voice that can go from wail to whisper has a GA connection. A successful Manhattan bow after time clearly spent honing her impressive skills elsewhere.
“Lynn Loosier, making her New York debut, entered the narrow south side of The Firebird Cafe room signing “Georgia on My Mind.” It may be safe to say that no one who’s ever performed the soulful anthem has ever had Georgia so much on her mind…”
